A Brief History

Susan R. Bowers Optometrists began trading on Tile Hill Lane in Coventry in 1984. Having qualified to practice, Susan began work at Salmons and Marsons Optometrists between 1974 and 1980. In 1981 she decided to experience life in a 'multiple' environment, choosing to ply her skills at Dolland & Aitchison for a year before the birth of her son, Scott in November that year. In order to care for Scott in his early years Susan made the decision to take a break from Optometry full-time and worked instead as a locum for Rayners, First Sight and the Co-op between the years of 1982 and 1984. Then in 1984, having enlisted Scott in Davenport Lodge School, Coventry during the daytime, Susan decided she would return to full-time practice and began trading under her own name at No. 267 Tile Hill Lane, Coventry.

Rapidly her patient database grew and in 1994, to accommodate her growing number of patients she purchased the freehold at No. 349 Tile Hill Lane. Over an eight-month period these larger premises were professionally converted into the custom-built Optometrist practice we see today.

Since moving the 200 metres along Tile Hill Lane onto the main parade our patient database has increased from 7,000 to the 11,000 patients they care for to date. With the transport link of the A45 running close to Tile Hill, the practice is accessible to patients from around the county and even further afield.

The practice's Senior Optometrist, Mrs. Susan R. Bowers, founded the Optometrists with a clear and simple aim in mind: to give people the sight that they deserve and can be made possible by today's technology. Susan truly believes that no one should undervalue the importance of vision.

At Susan R. Bowers great attention is paid to supplying a quality and thorough service. The main aim is to provide care for our patients, ensuring that they feel they are receiving such care on both a personal and professional level. The success of the practice could be attributed to the close links with the local community: looking after entire families and providing a domiciliary testing service for the housebound.

At Susan R. Bowers we interact closely with other Health Service providers such as local General Practitioners, pharmacists, nurses and the eye department at University Hospital, Walsgrave, to manage patient care in the area.
We see a number of children with learning difficulties and other special needs and also care for adults in a similar position. Our premises have full wheelchair access for the disabled and (as previously stated) we provide a home visiting service for the housebound; making the care provided at Susan R. Bowers available to all.
