Meet the Team

Susan R. Bowers, BSc (Hons), FCOptom, Dip CL, Dip Tp AS.

Susan has been a qualified optometrist since 1975 and a Contact Lens Practitioner since 1980.

She has worked in a range of Optometrists before opening her own practice in 1984. Statements of Achievements Susan has a keen interest in contact lenses and children with reading difficulty.

Throughout her career Susan has enthusiastically advanced her knowledge in theses (amongst other) avenues of Optometry. She was one of the first Optometrists to obtain a diploma in Therapeutics in 2006, so she can treat dry eyes, allergic conditions and minor eye disease by writing signed orders to the pharmacist.

Susan is always looking with interest at the latest optical equipment to advance her practice.One of the latest acquisitions is a rebound tonometer to measure eye pressure, so the patients never need to have their measurements done on the machine they dislike, that blows air at them.

Statement of Achievements

Clare Whyman FBDO (Dispensing Optician)

Clare first started working in an Optometry practice after she had finished her A levels She completed the three year correspondence course through the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. Clare qualified in 2003 and has worked at a number of different practices in the Midlands before joining the team at Susan R Bowers Optometrists in 2005.

She has the skill and expertise to dispense the wide range of spectacles and sports glasses available at the practice and takes a special interest in dispensing children and complex lenses of high prescription.

Carolann Cogger (Optometrist)

Carolann has completed a degree at Aston University, in Birmingham. This was a three year course, which gave her a BSc (Hons) in Optometry in July 2006. She has worked here since she was a Saturday girl during her degree course at Aston.

Carolann under took her pre-registration training at this practice and registered as an Optometrist, with the College of Optometrists in January 2007.

She was supervised by Susan Bowers, Caolann is enjoying every minute of her work here, which is quite varied and includes lots of contact lens work.

Karen Oldham (Optometric Assistant)

Karen joined the practice in April and is enjoying the variety of work.
She is happy to assist with you with your enquiries and make to appointments for you.

Currently Karen is training, so that she will be able to screen our patient’s eyes with the Visual Field Test and to teach patients how to take their contact lenses in and out (insertion and removal lessons).

Paula Hand (Mrs) (Optometric Assistant)

Paula joined the practice originally as a receptionist. She has now become an Optometric assistant capable of fitting and adjusting spectacles, teaching contact lens handling procedures and carrying out visual field tests.

Paula can be found on the front desk and is therefore usually the first person to deal with you upon entering the practice. A great deal of Paula's work takes place behind the scenes, ensuring the smooth running of the practice at all times. Paula takes a great deal of pride in knowing her role and the individual patients that she looks after in remarkable detail.
